The Birdhouse

Inspired by the ShelterPub books of Lloyd Kahn, and the surf stylings of Jay Nelson, this camper is a craftsman’s take on the concept of vanlife. Designed as a offgrid tiny home, complete with solar and a wood burning stove, the camper is wood frame construction on the bed of an F-250 pickup.

Fully designed and built from scratch, this project was a unique challenge in construction fabrication and detailing on an unconventional structure.

Serving as our primary residence during an extended climbing trip, the project examined how you can maintain a sense of presence and aesthetic comfort in an ever changing setting.

The galley kitchen in the birdhouse has six feet of paduk wood counters, a copper sink, and propane stove. Along with the 95 liter Dometic fridge freezer, there is plenty of space to cook up any meal you’re craving in the backcountry.

Despite its size and comforts, the Birdhouse is a capable overlanding rig. With its 4x4, lift, offroad tires, and legendary Ford 7.3 Diesel; this rig has made it down the Baja Peninsula to the East Cape and back.
